VA / CHAMPVA Provider Enrollment & Credentialing

10+ Years Experience
2-Day Payer Submission
2k+ Providers Served
300+ Payer Networks

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides healthcare to approximately 9 million enrolled veterans through its network of VA facilities and through the VA Community Care Network (CCN), which allows veterans to receive care from community providers when VA facilities cannot meet their needs. CHAMPVA provides similar coverage to dependents of veterans with 100% service-connected disabilities. Together, VA/CHAMPVA enrollment opens access to a substantial and often underserved patient population.

The VA Community Care Network is managed by Optum (a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary) nationwide, replacing the previous TriWest and Health Net managed regional contracts. Enrollment is processed through Optum's VA CCN portal, and the process resembles commercial payer credentialing in terms of documentation requirements. However, the VA has specific requirements around access standards and timely appointment availability that enrolled community providers must meet.

CHAMPVA is a separate program from the VA CCN, covering dependents of veterans rated 100% permanently and totally service-connected disabled. CHAMPVA operates as a fee-for-service program and does not use the VA CCN network. Providers serving CHAMPVA patients do not need to be in-network — CHAMPVA patients can see any Medicare-authorized provider and CHAMPVA pays the provider directly. However, some providers choose to file CHAMPVA claims on behalf of patients for a better patient experience.

Practices in communities with high veteran populations — particularly in the South, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest — will find VA Community Care enrollment strategically valuable. The VA's push toward community care following the MISSION Act has expanded the use of community providers, creating growing volumes for enrolled practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VA Community Care and CHAMPVA?

VA Community Care (managed through the VA CCN) covers active enrolled veterans who are authorized to receive care from community providers when VA can't meet their needs. CHAMPVA covers dependents of veterans with 100% permanent and total disability ratings — it operates as a separate fee-for-service program. Enrollment processes are distinct.

Do I need to be in-network with VA to see veteran patients?

To receive reimbursement through VA Community Care, you must be an enrolled VA CCN provider. Without enrollment, the VA will not reimburse you for care provided to veterans under Community Care referrals. For CHAMPVA dependents (not veterans), network enrollment is not required — any Medicare-authorized provider can see CHAMPVA patients.

How does the VA Community Care enrollment process work?

VA Community Care is managed by Optum (a UHG subsidiary). You enroll through Optum's VA CCN portal, submit credentials, and complete Optum's provider agreements. The process takes 30–90 days. VA CCN providers must meet access standards for appointment availability — this is a condition of participation.
